Celebrating Jan!

Good Morning Words and Pictures. I would just like to say a great big enormous 'thank you' to Jan Carr for everything she's done for this fabulous blog of ours. And what better way to do so, than to ask those who've worked with her over the last couple of years to say a few words...

Christmas feels like a distant memory. But before it sinks without a trace beneath the mists of time, here is one last brief reminder of those far-off festivities.

Ten-Minute Blog Break - 27th January

There's some serious love for UK YA books this week on the Blog Break, and especially for those fabulous book bloggers who do so much to share their love of reading, and to connect young readers with stories.

By any other name…

We’ve all been there. You’re in the middle of a scene; your heroine de jour, Kim Kardashian, is a top secret agent about to save the world as we know it. Kim’s been formulating in your mind for months now – the strawberry blonde hair, the butterfly tattoo on her left knee – but you suddenly have a fluttering sensation at the back of your mind. Haven’t I heard that name somewhere before?

Jan Carr
From your
one-time editor!
I don't know if it really was Girl Online, Zoe Suggs who first said 'say yes more to things to enjoy life more' but I'm told by daughter 2 who's been dubbed the  Queen of Improv by her youth theatre, that the first rule of improvisation is that you should never say 'No' to someone's suggestion. I'm sure you can think of many instances when it is actually good to say no but I'm with Girl Online and daughter 2 on that generally, 'Yes' is more fun.

How to turn yourself in to a writer

I sat in the garden last summer, scribbling my usual waffles of procrastination, and had an epiphanic (and what I thought was a truly original) moment of genius. If I wanted to be a writer, I'd have to start by playing the part.

Ten-Minute Blog Break - 13th January

In the wake of the shocking Paris attacks, this week's column should probably be renamed "The Ten-Minute Freedom of Speech Break". Be warned though, this is one debate that's going to take a lot longer than ten minutes to reach a resolution.

The sky's the limit

One day when I was ten years old, our teacher, Mrs Allen, gathered us in to the carpeted corner of the room, and sat us down on plastic pint-sized chairs to listen carefully.

2015 promises to be an inspiring year, and Words and Pictures is proud to welcome a fresh new artist as our first Featured Illustrator of the year. Sarah Palmer is a graduate of the MA course in Children's Illustration at the Cambridge School of Art, and one of the illustration winners of last year's Undiscovered Voices. See more of her work on the Featured Illustrator Gallery.

Network News: North West Reloading

A Sunday afternoon in December is always a good time for a SCBWI social so that’s what a group of us in the North West did.

We met in the café of the beautiful John Rylands library on Deansgate, more or less opposite the branch of Waterstone’s where many a crit group has gathered before.

This proved to be an ideal venue. Not too busy and a little way away from the bustle of the Christmas markets. Those who fancied a glass of wine could indulge whilst those of us who had to drive could keep safe with a luxurious hot chocolate or a fine coffee.  And then there was cake, of course.  Writers and cake. A common combination.
A bit of a tea-party?

The Debut Author Series: Krysten Lindsay Hager

The Learning Curve - Insights from Debut Authors

Nicky Schmidt

For many the road to publication is long and fraught. For others, a publishing deal comes relatively easily. Those who are still trudging the path may find it hard to imagine what it’s like to be a debut author, and authors with a few books to their name may only dimly recall the original experience.

Ten-Minute Blog Break - 6th January

Welcome to the future! According to Back to the Future II, people in 2015 should be riding on hoverboards or driving flying cars. Sadly, this doesn't yet seem to have come to pass, but at least someone invented the blog post!

SlushPile Challenge - January 2015

We are pleased to announce the
first SlushPile Challenge for 2015

Happy new creative 2015

There's nothing I like better than the chance of a clean break. If I could tear out my less glorious moments, like scribbled pages from a book, then I would gladly do so.
