SCBWI FACES Rekha Salin
Rekha Salin is an artist/illustrator from India, living in Bahrain with her husband and two kids. She is passionate about telling stories through pictures and feels there is so much of joy in giving characters a place and a world to live in and bringing stories to life which can make a reader laugh, cry, think, empower or just be silly. When she is not drawing you can find her going on long walks, clicking pictures with her mobile of every random thing she sees and dreaming of food. Spending time with family is her favorite thing to do. You can take a look at her portfolio here, follow her on Instagram or subscribe to her newsletter.
What do you do?
I illustrate picture books.
Do you have a ‘day job’ as well as volunteering and drawing?
Can you describe your working space?
How long have you been a SCBWI volunteer?
I have been a SCBWI volunteer since 2023 and a SCBWI member since 2020.
Describe the main tasks of your role as a SCBWI volunteer.
I am the RA for SCBWI International Central Region. I do the interviews for Inspirations from the BookShelves for Words & Pictures and also occasionally write for Know-How. I also led a Masterclass workshop for SCBWI BI on 'Storytelling using Color'.
What are the advantages of being a volunteer?
The connections I have made, the incredible people I have met and spoken to. It's priceless.
How many hours per week do you spend volunteering?
Around two hours but really, it depends.
Do the boundaries between volunteering get blurred or do you have clearly demarcated working/volunteering times/space?
Favourite children’s book?
Being a PB Illustrator there are far too many super favourites to pick from. I love Jon Klassen's books. Your School is the Best, Your Birthday was the Best, written by Maggie Hutching and illustrated by Felicita Sala are my all time favourites.

We love comments and really appreciate the time it takes to leave one.
Interesting and pithy reactions to a post are brilliant but we also LOVE it when people just say they've read and enjoyed.
We've made it easy to comment by losing the 'are you human?' test, which means we get a lot of spam. Fortunately, Blogger recognises these, so most, if not all, anonymous comments are deleted without reading.
