UNDISCOVERED VOICES INTERVIEWS James Crosland-Mills

For his contribution to our Undiscovered Voices anthology, illustrator James Crosland-Mills chose to explore the character of Bigfoot.

Tell us about yourself in 50 words or less

I have a strong interest in story telling and educating through narrative. I love to create worlds and character bios before even picking up the pen. When I’m not hunched over my desk drawing I’m usually found in a dark room editing natural history documentary outside exploring the natural world. 

Who or what do you think informs your illustration the most?


I am mostly inspired by nature and its diverse and intricate worlds. I strive for imagery that educates and moves people. Ultimately, I want every reader to find something new and enchanting every time they turn the page.

What materials do you enjoy using the most?

Currently, I use pen and paper and then colour the drawings digitally. I do like to experiment with other mediums especially watercolour. 

Why did you choose the scene you illustrated for UV2018?

There’s a lot of mystery around Big Foot so I wanted to explore a more personal side to him / her. The presence of the two children hiding and watching Bigfoot with the audience allowed a more intimate connection.

If there was one thing that stood out the most about being a part of UV2018, what would it be?

The workshop provided valuable insights in to portfolio presentation as well as professional feedback on my drawings.

What has been the most valuable part of UV2018 for you?

The UV gave me the opportunity to showcase my work to agents, and as a result I am now thrilled to be represented by Holroyde Cartey.
