ILLUSTRATOR IN ACTION Robin by Tita

This week we can watch our fabulous Tita Berredo in action. She is the Illustrator Coordinator of SCBWI British Isles and the Art Director of Words & Pictures. She has a Master's degree in Children's Literature and Illustration from Goldsmiths UOL, and a background in marketing and publicity. She is amazing at illustrating cute animals!

This video shows my drawing process of the little Robin for the SCBWI British Isles logo. It was captured straight from the software I used, Procreate. The video is a sped up time-lapse, but it took me about two hours from start to finish. I usually sketch and work in traditional media, but this drawing had a different purpose and I wanted to match the vector style of SCBWI's new owl logo. It's important to keep consistency when you are illustrating for a brand, and we should always match the media to the illustration's purpose. In the beginning I wanted to incorporate the robin to the owl design, as if it was a little friend. I gave him a little nest and even had a little fun adding specs to the owl, just to see how it would look like. I think it's important to play freely with the image to see what works and where it might take you. But then I thought it was best not to interfere with the original design and concentrate on the Robin instead. I used the logo There is a point in the video that you can see that I started to develop the robin's features a bit more, giving it some frizzy feathers and a more detailed beak. It looked good, I thought, but the owl design is so simplified that I preferred to keep the Robin as simple as it could be. Then I added colours, I knew the orange on his chest would go nicely with the owl's green. To pair it up I included the British Isles in the background with the same shade of green. Final details - I fixed the eyes, neck, and tail - et voilà!

We love comments and really appreciate the time it takes to leave one.
Interesting and pithy reactions to a post are brilliant but we also LOVE it when people just say they've read and enjoyed.
We've made it easy to comment by losing the 'are you human?' test, which means we get a lot of spam. Fortunately, Blogger recognises these, so most, if not all, anonymous comments are deleted without reading.
