The Words & Pictures Festive Quiz 2023

We hope you enjoy this quiz with a festive theme from Gulfem Wormald.

1. There is a well-known children’s Christmas book that was written in 1985 which famously features a train. One point for the name of the book, one point for the author and one more point for the same author’s other well known book. (3 points)

2. Which book is the below quote from? Who is the author? What are the names of the characters of A and B? And finally, name at least two of the other Christmas themed books from the same author. One point for each correct answer. (5 points)

“You are fettered,” said A, trembling. “Tell me why?”

“I wear the chain I forged in life,” replied the B. “I made it link by link, and yard by yard; I girded it on my own free will, and of my own free will I wore it.”

3. “I hope you will like the little things I have sent you. You seem to be most interested in Railways just now, so I am sending you mostly things of that sort. I send as much love as ever, in fact more. We have both, the old Polar Bear and I, enjoyed having so many nice letters from you and your pets. If you think we have not read them you are wrong; but if you find that not many of the things you asked for have come, and not perhaps quite as many as sometimes, remember that this Christmas all over the world there are a terrible number of poor and starving people. I (and also my Green Brother) have had to do some collecting of food and clothes, and toys too, for the children whose fathers and mothers and friends cannot give them anything, sometimes not even dinner. I know yours won’t forget you. So, my dears, I hope you will be happy this Christmas and not quarrel, and will have some good games with your Railway all together. Don’t forget old Father Christmas, when you light your tree.”

Every December, A’s children would receive a letter from ‘Father Christmas’. These letters shared Father Christmas’s experiences that year — from an accident-prone polar bear to goblin wars in caves beneath the house — and are riddled with life lessons. A has compiled all these short stories into one book.

What is the name of the author (referred to as A) and the book? One point for each correct answer. (2 points )

4. This book provides an insight into the Christmas truce that spontaneously broke out in the trenches of WW1 in 1914. What is the name of this famous book and who is the author? One point for each correct answer. (2 points )

5. This is a story of a dinosaur enthusiast boy and his Christmas enthusiast father. One point for the book's name and one point for the author's name. (2 points)

6. This is a story of a dinasour enthusiast boy and his Christmas enthusiast father. One point for the book's name and one point for the author's name. (2 points)

This interactive book has the little envelopes inside its sleeves which is the cutest thing ever :) One point for the name of the book and one point for each correct author. (3 points)

We love comments and really appreciate the time it takes to leave one.
Interesting and pithy reactions to a post are brilliant but we also LOVE it when people just say they've read and enjoyed.
We've made it easy to comment by losing the 'are you human?' test, which means we get a lot of spam. Fortunately, Blogger recognises these, so most, if not all, anonymous comments are deleted without reading.
