FROM YOUR EDITOR Words fail us

Now that I got your attention with a dramatic headline, we'd like to share some news – Words & Pictures will be published every other week from now on.

I assure you that the headline "Words fail us" is not a cheap clickbait. The truth is that we, the people of words, could not agree whether to call this new publication frequency bi-monthly or bi-weekly so we will stick to "every other week".

We are not the only ones who get confused. According to Dictionary.com, bi-monthly means both twice a month and every two months, so is bi-weekly. Cambridge dictionary also confirms that even though bi-monthly means "happening every two months", it is sometimes used to mean twice a month. Same confusion applies to bi-weekly.

To be clear, Words & Pictures will be published every other week! Why? In a nutshell, for two main reasons:

  • So that we give you amazing readers plenty of time to read and digest our articles
  • So that our amazing volunteers can have a more manageable workload and have a better life/work/volunteering balance

I particularly enjoyed the baffling conversations we had while we were using these words in our conversations on the run up to the decision. We kept "correcting" each other and then kept wondering what we actually want to do! Are we proposing that we publish twice a week, every other week, twice a month, every other month...? Were we all on the same page?!?

To me, this decision comes with a little life lesson: never underestimate the power of confusion simple words can bring. Something to think about when we’re writing our stories?

We hope you enjoy this issue. See you in two weeks.

  1. Fortnightly is the word you need. You will be publishing every two weeks or once a fortnight – a fortnightly publication.

We love comments and really appreciate the time it takes to leave one.
Interesting and pithy reactions to a post are brilliant but we also LOVE it when people just say they've read and enjoyed.
We've made it easy to comment by losing the 'are you human?' test, which means we get a lot of spam. Fortunately, Blogger recognises these, so most, if not all, anonymous comments are deleted without reading.
