CELEBRATIONS December 2024

It's our final celebration article of 2024 so let's celebrate the good news with extra cheer...

Congratulations to Tonka Uzu. Tonka is the illustrator of Elki is Not My Dog, written by Elena Arevalo Melville and published by Scallywag Press, which was highly commended in the Teach Early Awards earlier this month. It has also been nominated for the Carnegie Medal for Illustration 2025.

Tonka's book received a highly commended award

Elki is Not My Dog has already been translated into Spanish and Catalan (Belaterra Books), and will soon be published in the Turkish Language (MEAV). From October it is available in the US and has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, whose reviewer found "a pleasing Busytown quality" in the illustrations!

Wishing the book the best of luck in the next round

Tonka, we wish you the very best of luck for the Carnegie Medal 2025 and for your book's ongoing journey.

Jill Calder is celebrating the upcoming publication of Coorie Doon: A Scottish Lullaby Story, written by Jackie Kay. Jill is the illustrator of the book, which publishes on the 2nd January 2025 with Walker Books.

Jill was asked to illustrate this debut picture book three years ago

Jill spoke about the journey to publication on the SCBWI British Isles Facebook page:

"Three years ago Walker Books asked me to illustrate Jackie Kay’s first ever picture book…
it was a ‘pinch me’ moment in my long career! Now Coorie Doon: A Scottish Lullaby Story will finally publish on 2nd January 2025! I’m VERY excited about it! It’s a beautiful book celebrating the small perfect rituals of childhood that stay with us into adulthood  it’s dreamy, emotional and full of music."

A sneak peek inside the book...

Jill, your illustrations are dreamy too and we can't wait to see the book in print. Congratulations to you both!

Have you got good news to share? A new book? An offer of agent representation? An award? Don't be shy! Why not send an email over to production@britishscbwi.org together with a picture and any links so we can celebrate with you.

We love comments and really appreciate the time it takes to leave one.
Interesting and pithy reactions to a post are brilliant but we also LOVE it when people just say they've read and enjoyed.
We've made it easy to comment by losing the 'are you human?' test, which means we get a lot of spam. Fortunately, Blogger recognises these, so most, if not all, anonymous comments are deleted without reading.
