Apparently there's some competition called Undiscovered Voices that's just kicked off? Everyone seems very excited about it, but it's so long since I was involved that I can barely remember anything about it ;-) Good luck to anyone who's going to enter - I hope some of this week's blogs may prove enlightening...
Maureen Lynas had an honorary mention in Undiscovered Voices 2010, and then won in 2012. Sadly, her momentum didn't lead to a publishing contract. But Maureen was made of sterner stuff. With her debut novel arriving from Nosy Crow in August, Maureen reflects on her eighteen year apprenticeship in a sobering and inspiring piece for Notes from the Slushpile.
Novelist, creative writing tutor and co-creator of SCBWI-BI's Undiscovered Voices - Sara Grant has an impressive résumé. So who better to lead a session in writing for children and young adults? As well as running the session, Kellie Jackson was taking notes, which she shares with us on her blog.
Dom Conlon has been gradually unleashing a raft of creepy short fiction on his blog under the banner of "Badtime Stories." And now Unbound has agreed to collect them together into a book - provided enough people want to crowdfund the project. Read Dom's blog post on the subject and check out the Unbound funding page, which features some truly weird rewards for backers. Half-chewed toothbrush anyone?
Five SCBWI authors are coming to town (Glasgow), and Sarah Broadley is fangirling in a big way. But how will she cope when she has to unexpectedly chair the Lost and Found event itself? Find out in her blog post.
Mel Green likes a challenge. Or alternatively, is a bit mad. Either way, she had a great time writing a 2,000 word short story from scratch in two days for a flash fiction competition. You can read her post about her experience (and the finished story too).
Leo Baxendale, the genius creator of such anarchic Beano characters as The Bash Street Kids and Minnie the Minx, died a couple of weeks ago. David Thorpe has written a blog post in tribute, revealing some surprising details about Baxendale's heartfelt political views and his quest for social justice.

ReplyDeleteThank you for the mention Nick - Sara Grant was such a generous guest & in fine fettle. I just went back to my blog to remind myself about the event and found I'd erased half the opening paragraph when I'd published it...glad it seemed to make sense in spite of that!
