ILLUSTRATOR IN ACTION Tita Berredo

Words & Pictures is starting an exciting video feature
and Illustration Features Editor, Tita Berredo, tells you all about it.

It is not only interesting and satisfying to watch the behind the scenes of the illustration world, but also truly important to show how much hard work is put into these creations. What better place to show it than our beloved SCBWI magazine? I am really happy to introduce Illustrator In Action, a feature that shows actual videos of illustrators with their hands at work.

How does the submission work?

If you are a SCBWI illustrator member and have any videos of yourself drawing, or would like to make one from scratch, you can get in touch with us to be featured here. We would love to watch your illustration processes, sketching, digital time-lapses, mixing media, experimenting materials, know-hows -  anything that shows you in action with your illustrations.

Feel free to introduce yourself on the video or, if you are camera shy, let your hand be the star and do the job. If you like, you can also add inserts of your books, favourite materials, and sneak peeks of your studio/working place.

There is no need for crazy editing, but if you enjoy being creative on camera you can use time-lapses, transitions, narration, background music, lettering, etc. If you are able to take some video shots but don't know how to put them together we are happy to help.

The video can be as short as 30 seconds or as long as five minutes, and the format should ideally be landscape (although I know some of you will be prominent on Insta Reels and TikTok's vertical format). You can upload your videos to a platform like Youtube and send us the link, or send us the video file itself.

To submit please contact me at illustrators@britishscbwi.org

Send me the video file or URL, a few lines to explain its context, a short bio, a picture of you, and any websites or social media handles that you use.

To have an idea of how a simple video can look like I'll share one of my own here. I used time-lapse to speed up the process and added a fun music background provided by the editing app itself. It was all filmed on my smartphone and edited on an app called Videoshop.

Lights, camera, aaaaaaand illustrate!

We love comments and really appreciate the time it takes to leave one.
Interesting and pithy reactions to a post are brilliant but we also LOVE it when people just say they've read and enjoyed.
We've made it easy to comment by losing the 'are you human?' test, which means we get a lot of spam. Fortunately, Blogger recognises these, so most, if not all, anonymous comments are deleted without reading.
