ILLUSTRATION KNOWHOW Focus on goals

Ever wondered how someone who started much later than us or who has just joined is creating amazing works? How is it that someone can come up with different ideas and create works that’s so much more beautiful?Rekha Salin is here to help! She’s giving us her tips on how she gets her work done with a busy, busy schedule.

This is Part 2 of 4 in this series of time management skills.

It’s so commonly said that you need to “work your 10,000 hours”. Well, there is a caveat to that. Taking the example of two Golfers. In the case of Golfer A who practices diligently 8 hours every single day hitting the ball. However, his focus is only hitting the ball with no direction or goal. And we have Golfer B who practices only 3-4 hours a day, but with focusing on hitting the ball into the hole. At the end of a six-month period, who do you think would be a better golfer? Golfer A who practices for much longer hours without a clear focus or someone who practices for less time but with a focus in mind? It’s the same with art, too. Focus on what you really want to get better at and work towards it. Even if it is just an hour a day that is stolen between coffee breaks and waiting at the parking lots. An hour a day is 30 hours a month, which is still a lot in comparison to trying to make 8 hours a day and being unable to get anything done.

When I started in the industry, I gave myself 12 months’ time (an entire year) and every month, I focused on getting better at something in particular. For one whole month, I drew mostly only people, another month, I just painted landscapes.

It's not only the hours of practice that matters. It’s also the focus and the direction of practice/learning that matters. If you draw dogs for 8 hours every day, you will get very good at drawing dogs. However, drawing dogs everyday will not get you better at painting landscapes. What you focus on is what you get better at. So, in a busy schedule, where we make time by avoiding time wasters and mindless scrolling, create habits that take you to where you want to go. Don't sit on the wrong train and expect to be dropped off at the right station. Set clear goals and focus on how it achieves them. Also have a time frame in mind, a deadline by which you want to get it done. A goal without a deadline is only a wish.

Hitting your goals

We love comments and really appreciate the time it takes to leave one.
Interesting and pithy reactions to a post are brilliant but we also LOVE it when people just say they've read and enjoyed.
We've made it easy to comment by losing the 'are you human?' test, which means we get a lot of spam. Fortunately, Blogger recognises these, so most, if not all, anonymous comments are deleted without reading.
