CELEBRATIONS July 2018

The sun is still shining! Time to pop on those shades and get creative. Don't miss out on the fun and inspiration to be found in our glorious British Summer. B B Taylor begins the month of July by sharing some of our latest achievements with all our SCBWI celebration news.

New Releases

Perdita Cargill and Honor Cargill kick off our summer celebrations with their newest release. It's A Wrap is the third in the Waiting for Callback trilogy. Published by Simon & Schuster, this witty feel good romp has been causing a stir on twitter with book fans giving it fantastic reviews so far!

Brian Bird has got us all wanting to dance in the sun with his second book, Baby Boom is in the Room. Released on 31st July, this rhyming picture book tells the story of a baby boy called Raymond Kay, who turns out to be a music maestro called DJ 'Baby Boom' and proves "you are never too small to dream BIG!"

Ruth Estevez has much to celebrate with her long awaited debut novel Jiddy Vardy, released this month! One of the first new releases from exciting new publisher Zuntold.

Coming Soon

Kate Wiseman is pleased to announce Gangster School 2: The Brotherhood of Brimstone, which will be released this autumn with Zuntold following the amazing success of book one.

Kimberlie Hamilton is celebrating this month as she just signed the contract for her first non-fiction kids book about heroic cats throughout history! Scholastic will be publishing this purr-tastic book in the UK in November 2018. She worked with SCBWI editorial guru Esther Hershenborn during the writing, and thinks she deserves a shout out too! Here's a photo of her signing her contract at her favourite cat cafe (in Aberdeen, Scotland)! Because you should never turn down a chance to have tea surrounded by kitties.

Clare Helen Welsh is definitely not being rude when she shouts about her new book with Quarto. How Rude! is a hilarious picture book with an important message about kindness. It’s the first in a new series about two good friends, Dot and Duck. Dot invites Duck to a tea party, but from the moment Duck enters the house, the tea party descends into chaos ... From licking sandwich fillings to spitting tea, Duck gets ruder ... and ruder ... and ruder. Just how will Dot react to such outrageous behaviour? Brought to life by the amazing Olivier Tallec, How Rude! will be published on October 2nd 2018.

Lucy van Smit won the Bath Children’s Novel Award with her MA manuscript The Hurting, which is now being published by the lengendy Barry Cunningham, at Chicken House Books on 6th September 2018 in the UK. And it doesn't stop there, as the book is being translated into German, Russian, and Polish as well! The Hurting is the twisted love story of British teenage songwriter Nell Lamb, trapped as the main carer for her big sister in the Norwegian Fjords, and manipulated into abducting a baby.

Clare Helen Walsh can't get enough of celebrating this month as Maverick revealed their covers and confirmed publication of her early reader books which are due to be published in August 2018. She is thrilled with the cover reveals of Little King Carl and the Wish (Blue) and Jim and the Big Fish (Yellow) thanks to the wonderful handiwork of Marina Pessarradona and Patricia Reagan.

Awards

Zoe Armstrong is celebrating winning the April Slush Pile Challenge, set by Peter Marley, Senior Commissioning Editor at OUP Children's Books. He chose her picture book text When the Huggalumph Hullabalooed from the 97 entries. He said: "The premise of this story is unique and drew me in, the voice is bold and distinctive, the language is musical and lyrical, there is tension throughout, and the story contains meaning that young children will be able to relate to." Zoe is really looking forward to meeting him to have a chat about her work.

Agents

Signed this month with the brilliant Nancy Miles at Miles Stott Children's Literary Agency is the lovely Sophie Kirtley and she couldn't be happier! Congratulations!

Good News

The dragons are on the loose! Andy Shepherd’s debut The Boy Who Grew Dragons was launched on 14th June at Heffers Bookshop in Cambridge. There were dragons galore, jam tarts and even a six foot dragon-fruit tree! Andy said "It was such a fabulous evening and I want to thank everyone for all their wonderful support. So many best bits but particularly loved Polly Faber’s rendition of Puff the Magic Dragon on the kazoo as I did my first signing! You can see a video of the launch on my website."

We love comments and really appreciate the time it takes to leave one.
Interesting and pithy reactions to a post are brilliant but we also LOVE it when people just say they've read and enjoyed.
We've made it easy to comment by losing the 'are you human?' test, which means we get a lot of spam. Fortunately, Blogger recognises these, so most, if not all, anonymous comments are deleted without reading.
